PE teaches students a vast array of life skills and helps them to understand their own capabilities and how to overcome difficulties to gain success. It helps students with their self-confidence and self-esteem and develops characters who are able to communicate and cooperate well with others which are vital life skills we all require.
PE helps to promote health active lifestyles and within core PE the aims are for students to enjoy their learning and gain a love for physical activity which will lead to a lifetime of participation.
Students will learn to overcome setbacks, to compete, to win with humility and work with others expressing compassion. It will teach students to play with integrity and show ambition to achieve personal best performances. It will challenge students to work as individuals and with others to develop skills and understanding.

Curriculum Progression
Key Stage 3
At Key Stage 3, students will:
- develop key fundamental motor skills required in a range of sporting activities;
- develop problem solving skills through guided discovery;
- develop decision making abilities;
- learn how to analyse and improve performance;
- develop an understanding of tactics and techniques used in a wide range of activities;
- experience conditioned situations and competitive environments;
- begin to develop an appreciation of the components of fitness and how they contribute to sporting performance ;
- undertake coaching and leadership roles;
- receive feedback to reinforce positive attitudes and to consolidate learning as well as to improve upon performance and understanding.
Students will also develop the transferable skills of communication, negotiation, teamwork, building confidence, problem solving, time management, use of body language and use of voice.
Sports taught include: rugby, football, netball, rowing, hockey, badminton, basketball, rounders, cricket, athletics, gymnastics, trampolining and fitness. In addition, all students get to engage with our annual 15 Mile Challenge.
Key Stage 4 (Level 2)
At Key Stage 4, students studying BTEC Sport Level 2 take an externally assessed core unit (online examination), which requires them to work to show an understanding of the key components of fitness and principles of training as well as the methods of training and fitness testing. In addition, they take a further mandatory unit where they will need to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the rules and regulations of two sports as well as be able to demonstrate skills and implement these in competitive situations. They will also complete two further optional units which are coursework based looking at fitness training and the short-term and long-term effects of exercise on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems of the body.
Learners apply a range of skills knowledge and understanding that will be of value to further studies. For example, units provide learners with the opportunity to plan, participate and review as well as analyse throughout the course. It also forms the base knowledge from which to build upon in Level 3 qualifications.
In addition, all students, regardless of whether they select BTEC Sport Level 2 or not, continue to engage with core PE. In core PE lessons, students develop their knowledge and understanding of a range of sports and continue to develop the transferable skills listed as part of Key Stage 3.
Key Stage 5 (Level 3)
At Key Stage 5, students studying Sport undertake 3 externally assessed (exam) core units in Year 12 – Anatomy and Physiology and Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being and Development and Provision of Sport and Physical Activity along with five optional units that develop a further understanding of sport and the various avenues of employment it can lead to.

In Year 13 there is one more examination unit Investigating Business in Sport and the Active Leisure Industry, as well as the following optional, internally moderated coursework units

- Rules, Regulations and Officiating in Sport
