There has never been a time in recent history that shows the importance of studying health and social care as the insights we have gained throughout the time since Covid-19 became part of our communities. Healthcare worldwide is now paramount and we truly appreciate our key healthcare workers. The pandemic has had a huge impact on everyone’s lives but it has also had benefits in the world of healthcare.

If students follow this course, it can lead them to a rewarding career either straight from Sixth Form or as an entrance to college and university courses within the health and social care sector. Future qualifications can lead to global opportunities and in practice every day will be different – different patients, different needs and requirements; roles in this sector require problem solving and flexibility jobs will be interesting and motivating as you will never know quite what to expect. Health and Social Care offers long term employment prospects, with opportunity for promotion, progression and job security. Currently there are around 25,000 vacancies advertised with the NHS every month. In July 2020, 1.3 million people were employed by the NHS.

Curriculum Progression

Key Stage 5 (Level 3 National Diploma)

Students will complete two external examinations one on Human Lifespan Development and the other on Working in Health and Social Care; there is also a controlled assessment on Enquiries into current research in Health and Social Care where students have to study and complete a literature search on a contemporary issue within the sector. Students also have to study a range of units and prepare detailed assignments upon each, these include meeting individual care and support needs; principles of safe practice in Health and Social Care; Sociological Perspectives and Promoting Public Health.
